The Hermitage possesses the world's best collection of Byzantine silverware dating from the 4th to 12th century. Unique items come from a hoard discovered in the settlement of Malaya Pereshchepina in Poltava Region at the start of the 20th century. The Eucharistic dish decorated with the monogram of Christ was made for Bishop Paternus in Constantinople. The Hermitage presents a superb collection of carved ivory articles: diptychs, caskets and pyxes. Among the finest is a diptych with depictions of circus scenes.
