Only in the Hermitage it is possible to see highly artistic
works of Byzantine icon-painting from the 11th to 15th century. The
finest pieces in the collection are St Gregory the Wonderworker,
Christ Pantocrator and The Great Martyr Anastasia (turn
of the 15th century). The 12th-century Transfiguration of Our Saviour
with a red background comes from a Church Feasts cycle. Of interest
too are small carved ivory icons from the 10th to 12th century and
the famous Byzantine cloisonné enamels. The display
also includes glazed ceramics from the 10th to 15th century and a
collection of cameos and intaglios. |
