This room is used to display metal items made between
the 8th and 13th centuries in the countries of the Near East: vessels,
trays, censers and lamps. Particularly noteworthy are the Iranian
articles in the shape of a horse, a pheasant and a lynx that are decorated
with ornament and Arabic inscriptions (including the name of the craftsman).
The masterpieces of the Hermitage collection are a kettle from the
city of Herat (present-day Afghanistan) with a pattern of scenes from
court life and well-wishing inscriptions and also an aquamanile (water
jug) in the form of a cow and a calf with a lion. The aquamanile was
made in a single casting and decorated with ornament and an inscription
in Persian. |
