You can get a splendid view of Palace Square from the roof of the Winter Palace. On the opposite side it is enclosed with the huge General Staff building, with the famous Triumphal Arch topped by the Chariot of Glory. In the centre of the square, like a lighthouse in the open sea, the Alexander Áolumn towers. Behind it, among the densely arranged buildings, glittering in the sun are the gilded cupolas of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ (the "Saviour-on-the-Spilt-Blood"), the greenish dome of the Kazan Cathedral and the huge dome of St Isaac's that seems to be hovering over the city.
