St Isaac's Cathedral, one of the most majestic buildings
in St Petersburg, was constructed to the design of Auguste Montferrand
in the mid-19th century. The upper part of the cathedral, crowned
with the huge dome that is covered with noble lack-lustre gilt, rises
above the surrounding structures and is well seen from the Winter
Palace's roof. On the left side of the Admiralty building are the
trees of the Alexander Park which is spreading to Senate Square. |
