The ensemble on the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island between the two bridges spanning the arms of the River Neva can be compared with a ring in which the oval granite embankment is set like a gem. Attention is attracted by the white Doric colonnade of the Exchange building which is raised on a high podium like an ancient Greek temple. It is flanked by two Rostral columns decorated by the prows of ships and, at the foot, by enormous stone allegorical figures of the Volga, Dnieper, Neva and Volkhov Rivers. On public holidays large torches are lit on tops of the columns, just as many years ago when they showed ships the way.
