The River Neva, lined with the Hermitage Museum's buildings,
is one of the most beautiful sights of the city. The windows of the
Winter Palace afford a fine view of the river slowly carrying its
deep waters to the Gulf of Finland. However, it is so changeable:
now it is ice-bound; now it is calm, with tourist river-boats plying
all around; and now it is furious threatening to flood the city spreading
out on its banks. |
