Cy Twombly at the Hermitage. Fifty Years of Works on Paper

On 8 July, 2003 the exhibition of Cy Twombly works opened in The General Staff Building. Cy Twombly at The Hermitage: Fifty Years of Works on Paper is the long awaited retrospective of the artist’s drawings, monotypes and paintings on paper. The exhibition includes 80 works ranging from early drawings from 1953 to new, vibrantly colored and large scale paintings on paper made in Gaeta, Italy. Many of the works have never been exhibited or published before.

Cy Twombly was born in Lexington, Virginia in 1928. He has lived in Italy since the 1950’s and now divides his time between Rome, Gaeta, and Lexington. He was the recipient of the Lion D’or prize for lifetime achievement at the 2001 Venice Biennale. He had a major retrospective exhibition of paintings at Museum of Modern Art, NY, 1994, and of his sculpture at Kunstmuseum, Basel, 2000. The Cy Twombly Gallery is a permanent part of the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas.

The exhibition will travel on to the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich (7 October - 30 November 2003), the Musee d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris (21 January - 29 March 2004) and the Serpentine Gallery in London (13 April - 23 May, 2004).

The show has been curated by Julie Sylvester, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at The State Hermitage Museum. There will be a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by historian and critic Simon Schama, published for the museum by Schirmer Mosel Verlag.

The exhibition is sponsored by The Broad Art Foundation, The ACE International Foundation and American Friends of The Hermitage.
