Rem Koolhaas presents an archictectural concept for reconstructing the General Staff complex On 26 April 2004 the Hermitage Theater was the venue for a presentation by Hermitage consultant Rem Koolhaas to staff of the Hermitage and journalists. Mr Koolhaas spoke about the architectural concept which his Dutch office AMO has developed for transforming the premises of the General Staff buildings into museum space. Rem Koolhaas is an official consultant to the Hermitage in matters relating to the project for reconstruction of the East Wing of the General Staff within the framework of the "Greater Hermitage" program. This was a "middle stage discussion", as Director of the State Hermitage Boris Piotrovsky said at the opening of the meeting. Koolhaas’s group has carried out research in which the museum is viewed within its social, political and economic contexts. Ideas were put forward for transforming the premises while respecting the specific requirements of a museum, which are, in the architect’s opinion, to combine luxury of the space itself with the wealth of the collections at the same time as you leave open for each spectator the possibility of close personal communion with art. Among the issues discussed at the meeting were whether to alter or preserve the interior structure of the building, how to organize the visitor flows, and also how to accommodate the very different exhibitions, some of which have only one or several exhibit items and are devoted to a very concrete subject. |
