IV International Festival: Music of the Greater Hermitage

On 13 July 2004 a press conference was held to present the music festival of the Hermitage Music Academy scheduled for 14 – 23 July 2004 and organized by the Hermitage Music Academy Foundation and the State Hermitage.

This year’s festival brings together 18th century opera and a mystery show set to the music of 20th century composers. The festival opens in the Hermitage Theater with a staging of the opera Armida e Rinaldo, written by one of the outstanding composers of the late 18th century, Guiseppi Sarti (14-15 July).

On 21 July the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace will serve as the venue for a presentation of the musical and theatrical production l’Episode de la vie d’un artiste, from Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique, in which the actor Sergey Makovetsky will take part. The music will be performed by the State Hermitage Orchestra, together with the Dmitry Shostakovich Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic under the direction of National Artist of Russia Nikolai Alekseev.

On 23 July the musical mystery show The Tree of Life takes place in the Grand Courtyard and features the poet and musician Yuri Shevchuk and actress Dina Korzun reciting verses of 20th century poets to the accompaniment of music by Mahler, Honegger, Aivza and Prokofiev. Laureate of international competitions, violinist Sergey Malov will also perform.

The concept of the festival was drawn up by its Artistic Director Sergey Yevtushenko, Director of the Hermitage Music Academy Foundation.
