Awards Ceremony of the Baltic Star, an International Prize for Developing and Strengthening Humanitarian Links among the Countries of the Baltic Region

On 1 October 2004 the 14th Baltiisky Dom International Theater Festival held its first ceremony to award the Baltic Star, an International Prize for Developing and Strengthening Humanitarian Links among the Countries of the Baltic Region.

The Prize was established earlier this year by the RF Ministry of Culture and Mass Media, the RF Union of Theater Employees, the St Petersburg Committee on Culture, the World-Wide Club of Petersburgers and the Baltic International Festival Center Foundation. Four outstanding personalities in the field of culture who have made significant contributions towards the development and strengthening of humanitarian links among countries of the Baltic region received the high distinction of becoming prize winners: Lithuanian actor Donatas Banionis, Polish film director Andrzej Wajda, State Hermitage Director Mikhail Piotrovsky and director of the Federal Agency on Culture and Cinematography Mikhail Shvydkoi.

The Baltic Star prize was created in recognition of the fact that long term interregional political and economic programs largely rely on the intellectual and creative work of people in the arts, sciences and culture generally. They are the ones who today are busy popularizing projects that will facilitate formation of a consensus and stable social processes.

The nomination of candidates for the prize is carried out by an Expert Council made up of theater critics, staff in the embassies and general consulates of Baltic region countries, directors of cultural centers and institutes in Baltic region countries, as well as representatives of international organizations.

A token of the Baltic Star prize to be worn on lapels has been designed in the form of a starfish with a diamond in the center. The token is made of 14-carat gold and is presented in a special case shaped like a sea shell. The jewelry box is itself made of the semiprecious stone obsidian and gilded silver. The designer is S.A. Falkin and the production was done by the Bagulnik workshop.

The Baltic Star awards ceremony will take place every autumn in the context of the Baltiisky Dom International Theater Festival. The main sponsor of the prize is the Kronwerk Cinema network of movie theaters.
