Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky receives the "Order for Merit to the Italian Republic" At a festive awards ceremony held on 9 December 2004, the "Order for Merit to the Italian Republic", which is the only official order of the Italian Republic, was conferred on Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky. The "Order for Merit to the Italian Republic" is the only official order of the Italian Republic. It was established on 3 March 1951 following the creation of the Italian Republic. It is awarded by the President of the Republic on the basis of a careful screening of candidates and has several levels. Foreign citizens who are outstanding in their chosen field and have made a great contribution to the development of relations between their own country and Italy may be chosen for this honor. In 2000 Mikhail Piotrovsky received the Commander’s Cross of the "Order for Merit to the Italian Republic". In receiving the Grand Officer’s rank, the Director of the State Hermitage has now attained one of the highest levels of this order. This underscores once again how highly the Italian Republic respects and appreciates his activities. The order was presented by the Ambassador of the Italian Republic in the Russian Federation, Mr. Gian Franco Facco Bonetti. |
