Students' Day in the Hermitage

On 3 October 2004 the Youth Center of the State Hermitage held its annual celebration for St Petersburg students in the Hermitage Theater. Following tradition, Hermitage Director Mikhail Piotrovsky officiated at the start.

The main idea of the celebration is usually to highlight the most important event of the year in the Hermitage. This time the program was devoted to the opening of the Hermitage’s branch in Amsterdam, which was inaugurated on 28 February 2004. Svetlana Filippova, senior research officer in the State Hermitage’s Development Department and coordinator of the International Club of Friends of the Hermitage, spoke about how the branch abroad was created and also about its present status and plans for the future. The Dutch have given a huge amount of help to the Hermitage though their involvement in the restoration of various rooms and museum buildings. Sergei Mishin, section leader in the Department of the Chief Architect of the Hermitage, delivered a speech about the project for the reconstruction of the Hanging Garden of the Small Hermitage which is now underway with assistance from Dutch specialists.

The third part of the program of Student Day dealt with the new educational programs of the Student Club and forthcoming projects of the Youth Center during the 2004-2005 season. Section leaders addressed the audience. One new event this season is the opening of a joint project between the Youth Center and the Center for Contemporary Art entitled Topical Art of Petrograd, Leningrad and Petersburg. There will also be a series of lectures on the most important aspects of the Avant-garde from 1910 to the 1930’s, the movement of unofficial art in the post-war Soviet period 1940-1970’s, through to topical art of the recent past to the present day. The lecture series will be complemented by master-classes conducted by well known Petersburg artists. The courses will be held in the halls of the Hermitage and also in the Youth Center at Moyka Embankment, 45 (home of the Computer Class and Library).

The last part of the program for Student Day involved visiting the museum’s rooms of Dutch art. Current members of the Student Club were treated to an additional pleasure: they saw the beautiful ensembles of Petersburg from the roof of the Hermitage.
