A meeting with the author of the book The Curator, Mikhail Glinka On 19 November 2004 the public was invited to meet author Mikhail Glinka in the Youth Center of the State Hermitage for a presentation of his latest book, The Curator. The book is dedicated to a Russian historian who was for many years curator of the department of the history of Russian culture, Vladislav Mikhailovich Glinka. The meeting took the form of an unhurried conversation during which Mikhail Glinka spoke about the subject of one of his novellas. The hero of the piece faces a choice between learning the history of his family with all its conundrums and problems or living as he did before. The writer answers this question by relating the history of his own extended family, which had both officers of Imperial Russia and officers of the Red Army, as well as doctors, musicians, historians and writers. Students listened to these family legends with great interest and looked over old photographs. A number of items which Mikhail Glinka took out of his enormous bag contributed to the special atmosphere: these included an infant's christening garment from the 19th century, a tobacco pouch embroidered by a purged relative during incarceration, letters, diplomas... The meeting with Mikhail Glinka once again demonstrated how important it is for young people to know their own family history and "not be Ivans who have no memory of their folk." This was the first meeting in the program called Guests of the Youth Center. In the near future there are plans to arrange meetings with a senior staff member, archeologist D.A. Machinsky, and with the art historian, docent of the Academy of Arts, A.V. Stepanov. |
