New Year's Celebration for the Drawing Studio of the School Center On 25 December 2004 the exhibition We Draw in the Hermitage was opened and a traditional New Year’s celebration was organized for students in the Drawing Studio of the School Center. A handsome procession of children in masks and costumes accompanied by their relatives passed through the halls of the museum into the foyer of the Hermitage Theatre, where the opening of the exhibition took place. Georgy Vilinbakhov, Deputy Director of the State Hermitage for Scholarly Work, was among those who took part in the festive ceremony. What followed was a dramatized presentation in the Hermitage Theatre put on by students of the Drawing Studio. Two months were spent preparing the children and their parents for the masquerade, including the selection of the featured theme of the show, the writing of the libretto with rhyming texts, and studying the theme during courses held in the museum halls. The main subject of all these efforts was the Hermitage itself and its collections. With help from their parents, the children created the costumes, which presented separate topics, ranging from the gods and heroes of Ancient Greece and Egypt, the different genres and schools of painting, the rooms and buildings of the Hermitage, artists, architects, and the creators of museum collections. The show on the stage of the Hermitage Theatre is the culmination of a great deal of work by the children, their parents and the teaching staff.
