Family Competition of Ice Sculpture: The Realm of the Snow Queen in the Winter Palace

On 26 December 2004 an ice sculpture competition was held in the Great Ceremonial Courtyard of the Winter Palace. Young artists from the Drawing Studio of the State Hermitage School Center and their parents took part in The Realm of the Snow Queen in the Winter Palace.

The winter school holidays are a long-awaited vacation for the children. This is the first time that the Great Ceremonial Courtyard of the Winter Palace has been made available for this unique event.

With some help from sculptors of the Ice Studio art center, the family teams created ice sculptures of their own design in the courtyard. Among the subjects used for the compositions were the Hermitage, its various exhibits, and personages known from fairy tales. Sparkling ice sculptures are a form of ice theatre. There are plans to hold the competition annually.

The organizers of the project were the State Hermitage and the Ice Studio art center.
