Meeting to Commemorate Vladimir Grigoryevich Lukonin (1932-1984) Department of Culture and Art of the Orient On 26 January 2005 the annual Lukonin Conference took place in the Library of the Oriental Department of the State Hermitage. These readings are organized by the Oriental Department to honor the memory of the outstanding specialist in Iranian studies, V.G. Lukonin, who for many years chaired the department. One special feature of the conference is the factual mini-reports devoted to issues of oriental history and culture. B.I. Marshak's report was dedicated to manuscripts from the early 8th century which were excavated from a room open on one side. Previously such rooms exposed to rain and wind yielded up only primitive drawings. The recently discovered manuscript evidently is a sort of picture about a fable. It likely symbolized the power and authority of the owner of the house. G.L Semenov's report spoke about the nucleus of a residential quarter dating from the 10th-11th centuries in the southern outskirts of the Sogdian city of Paikend, 60 km from Bukhara. This core area, which was discovered during the 2004 season, later was in the center of the district that grew out of it. M.G. Kramarovsky's report examined the ceramics complex found in one of the 13th - 14th century firing kilns in the suburb Solkhata, Old Crimea. Attention is given to a group of works having various shapes but similar depictions of a bird resembling a chicken. Each master's individual manner is evident. |
