Finale of the Joint Project between the State Hermitage and the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory (LFZ) - the Academy of Porcelain On 10 February 2005 the Arts Council, which is made up of well-known art historians, the Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory Galina Tsvetkova, summarized the results of one of the most outstanding programs in the arts over the past several years, the Academy of Porcelain. At first glance an historical precedent for this program may be found in the 1920’s, when a whole constellation of “star” artists worked together with the former Imperial Porcelain Factory. If we name just a few of these talents - Kandinsky, Malevich and Petrov-Vodkin - then even someone rather removed from the arts will take notice and be impressed. As a result of their work , world art was enriched by the appearance of that unique phenomenon, propaganda porcelain. Although the significance of today’s program will be judged definitively by future generations, one thing is already perfectly obvious: the Academy of Porcelain has clear ties in time and space to the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory; it has become a center of attraction for some of the country’s most prestigious artists. The creative partnership between the Hermitage and Russia’s first porcelain works has borne tangible fruit. The LFZ provided fully equipped work places to the invited masters, gave them all necessary materials and made available to them its own artists, who acted as expert consultants. The Hermitage made available one of its halls for the exhibition. The exhibition was rather eclectic, bringing together different movements in art from hyper-realism to a sardonic Mitky style that evokes a well-meaning smile. The blend of original ideas, genres and schools illustrates the present tendencies in the development of modern art and gives convincing evidence that the close proximity of dissimilar and egocentric "demiurges" is not only possible but also useful insofar as it arouses in the public genuine interest both in the personalities and in the subject matter of art.
