During 2 and 3 June 2005, a conference was held dedicated to reports on the research carried out by the museum’s archeological expeditions during 2004. In keeping with tradition, the reports delivered by participants dealt with the work performed by the 16 scheduled expeditions of the State Hermitage.

A collection of the reports, entitled Archeological Expeditions, was prepared for publication in time for the opening of the session. The practice of publishing materials relating to archeological expeditions dates back to the 1930’s. At first, resumes of reports setting out the results of archeological expeditions were published, then came collected volumes on the research work intended as quick reference materials relating to the expeditions. The new publication of 2005 is a continuation of the report resume format, though with significantly more space for longer articles and with illustrations.
