Master Class: an international art festival

On 22 June 2005 an event entitled Live Grass took place on Palace Square in St Petersburg. This was timed to coincide with the anniversary of Russia's entry into World War II and was arranged in the framework of Master Class, the 13th International Festival of the Arts. Hermitage Director Mikhail Piotrovsky is President of the Festival and T. Semenova is its organizer.

The main event of the festival was the project on Palace Square, which was a "symbol of peace and a place for memorable celebrations." For the first time in the city's history over the past 200 years the square was covered in green grass, a symbol of eternal life which no war can leave behind. It was also symbolic that children who took part in this event chose as the subject for their drawings a world without war. They created the drawings right on the square and gave them out to veterans.

St Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly V. Tyulpanov, Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky, Director of the State Russian Museum Vladimir Gusev, and war veterans were among those who spoke at the opening of the event. They recollected the tens of millions of our compatriots who perished during the Great Patriotic War (WWII) and the heroism of Leningrad and its residents during the years of the siege.

Three hundred candles were lit on the square to honor the memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War. Three sculptures of Deep-red Roses by German sculptor Sergej Dott were set up on the grass. These had formerly decorated Potsdam Square in Berlin and were given to Petersburg to commemorate the victory in the Second World War.

The International Festival is held each year in June and brings modern art closer to people. In the context of the festival, artists join in making drawings together with children and with anyone else who wants to commune with art.
