Modern French Cinema From 17-19 April 2005 a festival of films made by young French cinema directors was held in the Youth Center of the State Hermitage. Cinema specialist Evgeni Zvonkina was especially invited to Russia to act as master of ceremonies of this program. Evgenia was born in Moscow in 1979. At present she lives in Paris, where she is a graduate student in the department of cinema studies of the Paris-8 University. Under the direction of her professor Claudine Eizikman, she is writing a dissertation on the work of Kira Muratova. In parallel, Evgenia Zvonkina teaches cinema theory at the same department and delivers lectures on film analysis to lycee instructors. She regularly works as a translator for film shootings and festivals, and she does subtitles. Each year she attends the Cannes Festival as a critic and writes articles for the newspaper OFF, which is published by an association of former members of the youth jury at the Festival. In the Youth Center Evgenia Zvonkina presented a program consisting of
French films made over the past several years: The films made by these young directors amazed viewers. With respect to Valerie Mrejen, the surprising elements were the shooting methods and the dialogues which are central to them, consisting of literary and conversational clichés. In the case of Vincent Dieutre, it was the mixture of documentary and art-film techniques. In Philippe Ramos’ work, it was the special manner of filming on location, the minimalism in acting and in dialogues. Within the framework of these film screenings, Evgenia talked about French computerized animation films over the past several years, cartoons created by Marie Paccou such as Un jour (One Day) and by Jerome Boulbes, such as Le puits (The Well), La mort de Tau (The Death of Tau), and Rascagnes. There were heated debates when the films were discussed, touching on various issues relating to both Russian and foreign films. The meeting with Evgenia Zvonkina devoted to modern French cinematography will be remembered by the students for a long time.
