In the Shade of the Hermitage.
An exhibition of works by American students. On 13 July 2005 an exhibition opened in the Youth Educational Center of the State Hermitage featuring works by American students who completed an art course in the framework of a joint program between the State Hermitage and the Rhode Island School of Design. At present many museums around the world devote serious attention to the art education of young people. The State Hermitage is not only one of the largest museums in the world but it is also a powerful educational and cultural center. For several years now the museum has encouraged the development of a unique, multifaceted educational program for young people living both inside Russia and in foreign countries. Each year during the June-July period the Youth Educational Center is host to a six-week course on art history, the "Art Semester." For the second year running its participants are drawn from among students of the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the oldest private art universities in the USA. They come to Russia to get to know Russian culture better and to experience firsthand the world cultural heritage that is exhibited in the museum collections. The Art Semester was developed by Yelena Varshavskaya and staff of the State Hermitage. The director of the program is Deputy Director of the State Hermitage G.V. Vilinbakhov and its curator is the directress of the Youth Educational Center, S. V. Kudryavtseva. The program entitled "Russian Culture in Retrospective" includes both practical and theoretical studies. Trips to Novgorod the Great and Moscow give the Americans a supplemental understanding of Russian history and the unique centuries-old world of ancient Russian culture. The program also includes visits to exhibitions, meetings with Petersburg artists and master classes. During the course of their numerous trips, the students create paintings and graphics which reflect their immediate impressions of their stay in Russia. The results are presented in the exhibition In the Shade of the Hermitage, which opened on 13 July 2005 in the exhibition room of the State Hermitage's Youth Educational Center. The exhibition is open daily from 13:30 in the exhibition room of the Youth Educational Center on Moyka Embankment, 45. |
