Eighth Annual Summer School of
the State Hermitage and the European University in St Petersburg The Eighth Annual Summer School of the State Hermitage and the European University in St Petersburg took place between 7 and 14 August 2005. This year's theme for the program was “The Imperial Collections of Western European Art in the State Hermitage.” The series of lectures and seminars opened with the traditional introductory lecture by museum director Professor Mikhail Piotrovsky. This year's speech was devoted to the activity of art collecting and the passion for collecting seen among members of the Romanoff dynasty, beginning with Peter the Great and ending with Nicholas II. A unique feature of the Summer School this year as in the past is that the courses are given not only in the generally accessible halls of the museum, but more particularly in the Hermitage storerooms, where special seminars for Summer School participants are conducted by museum curators. This year's program included courses in the storage premises for paintings, etchings, drawings, medieval applied art, costumes and textiles, porcelain and jewelry. Among those taking part were art historians, collectors and art lovers from Western Europe and North America. English is the working language of the school. Professor Roman Grigoriev, who heads the Department of Western European Etchings, is responsible for directing the Summer School. For further details about the Summer.
