International Competition and Theatre of Ice Sculptures

On 10 January 2006 the Christmas Symphony International Theatre and Competition of Ice Sculptures, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen, was held in the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace. Sculptors from Holland, England, Latvia and Russia created sculptures around the themes of Hans Christian Andersen's tales. In accordance with the plans of the organizers, especially selected music and lighting were used to turn the competition of ice sculpture into a kind of ice theatre.

The competition was held for 24 hours in the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace. Each team was given a space measuring 2.0 meters õ 2.0 meters. The compositions were made from between 7 and 10 blocks of ice (1.0 õ 0.5õ 0.2) and one block of snow (1.0 õ 1.0 õ 15). Each participant was supposed not only to make a composition in ice but also to suggest the musical and lighting to go with his sculpture. The compositions were evaluated on a 100-point scale in which artistic value counted for up to 40 points; technical mastery, for up to 40 points; originality, for up to 10 points; and appropriateness of the composition for the recommended theme, up to 10 points.

The jury consisted of representatives of the Government of St Petersburg and the State Hermitage, as well as well-known personalities from culture and art, and representatives of the sponsoring companies Master-Complex and the Hotel Kempinsky Moyka 22.

Visitors to the competition voted for a prize expressing the "Viewers' Sympathies." The competition was open to young visitors to the Hermitage together with their parents. The organizers of the competition were the State Hermitage and the Ice Studio Art Center.

2nd place - Dmitry Glebezdov (Àrkhangelsk, Russia)
3rd place - Maurice den Boer (Netherlands)
4th place - Adrian Innoset (Wales, Great Britain)
5th place - Laura Eden (Wales, Great Britain)
6th place - Valery Petrenko (Ukraine)
The prize awarded by spectators was given to Dmitry Glebezdov (Àrkhangelsk, Russia)
