Press Conference of the Sixth International Festival Music of the Greater Hermitage

On 24 July 2006 a press conference was held in the Hermitage Theatre devoted to the music festival opening soon in the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace.
The State Hermitage and the Foundation of the Hermitage Academy of Music presented the Sixth International Festival Music of the Greater Hermitage which will take place in St Petersburg from 25 through 27 July 2006 with support from the Committee on Culture of the Government of St Petersburg. The Chairman of the Artistic Council and Honorary Chairman of the festival is Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky. The originator of the idea and the artistic director of the festival is the composer Sergey Yevtushenko.

The International Festival Music of the Greater Hermitage began with the memorable event of 26 July 2001 when the public was invited into the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace for the premiere of an oratory by one of the greatest composers of our day, Krzysztof Penderecki, The Seven Gates of Jerusalem. A specially installed stage and temporary flooring accommodated more than 350 musicians coming from six countries around the world and an audience of more than 4,000.

In 2002, the festival was held in the halls of the Hermitage. For the first time the Great Throne Room (St George's Hall) was used for the concerts. Under the tsars, the Throne Room had been the main state room of the Winter Palace. The concerts brought together musicians from St Petersburg, Germany, Sweden and Lithuania.

In 2003, a stylized Carnival in Venice of the North was held in the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace. Among the performers were two world renowned opera stars – Lyubov Kazarnovskaya and Katya Ricciarelli . In 2004, the festival united various genres and epochs in art: the 18th century opera Armida i Rinaldo by Guiseppe Sarti; a very romantic 19th century work, the Symphonie fantastique of Hector Berlioz, which was turned into a musical theatre show, An Episode from the Life of an Artist, presented by Sergey Makovetsky; and a musical mystery based on verses and music of 20th century composers, with the participation of Yuri Shevchuk and Dina Korzun.

In 2005, the festival Music of the Greater Hermitage marked its fifth anniversary and invited to the celebration the best soloists and orchestras of Russia. Alongside the State Hermitage Orchestra, the program of the Tchaikovsky Gala which was directed by Saulius Sondeckis, featured the Virtuosi of Moscow chamber orchestra and the virtuoso trumpeter Sergey Nakaryakov. Berlioz' Requiem was performed together with the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre under the direction of Maestro Valery Gergiev.

The Sixth Festival includes three concerts in which there will be performances by celebrated ensembles - the Virtuosi of Moscow, the Terem Quartet, Yuri Shevchuk and DDT, - as well as the actor Sergey Bezrukov. As usual, the State Hermitage Orchestra will participate in the festival under the direction of Saulius Sondeckis, who is celebrating this year the 50th anniversary of his artistic career. This year's festival is supported by OJSC Vneshtorgbank.

The festival opens on 25 July with a joint project of the Virtuosi of Moscow and the Terem Quartet. In the Bal Masquerade program there are works of classical, contemporary, folk and popular music in a special arrangement for the Terem Quartet and symphonic orchestra. The unexpected combination of an orchestra and ensemble of Russian folk instruments promises many surprises for the audience. Svyatoslav Belza will be the presenter.

On 26 July the musical mystery Amadeus is devoted to the 250th anniversary of the birthday of Wolfgang Mozart. Sergey Bezrukov will read excerpts from Mozart's letters to his father, wife and friends as well as from Schaeffer's play Amadeus. Excerpts from symphonies, concertos, operas and the Requiem will be performed by the Virtuosi of Moscow orchestra, the State Hermitage Orchestra, the Lege Artis chorus and soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre.

On 27 July the legendary group DDT, headed by Yuri Shevchuk, will join with the State Hermitage Orchestra. The group will perform in its traditional make-up but with "softened" acoustics appropriate to the atmosphere of the Grand Courtyard of the Winter Palace. They will present both new songs as well as favorite hits in “baroque” orchestration written specially for this program.
