14th All-Russian Numismatic Conference

As decided by the United Council on Numismatics, which includes the numismatic departments of the State Hermitage, the State Historical Museum, the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Russian Museum, the Armory and the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Archeology, the 14th All-Russian Numismatic Conference was held from 16 through 21 April 2007 by the State Hermitage, together with the Gatchina State Art History Palace, Park and Museum Preserve, with support from the Russian Humanities Scientific Foundation (Project Nr. N 07-01-14070).

The official opening of the ARNC took place on 16 April in the Hermitage Theatre. That was also the venue for the plenary session, which was dedicated to the memory of the great domestic numismatics researchers V.M. Potin (1918-2005) and A.S. Melnikova (1929-2005).

On the following days (17-20 April) the work of the ARNC took place in the Concert Complex of the Gatchina Museum-Preserve. The sessions were by sector. A total of 129 reports were delivered and they dealt with Antique, Byzantine, Oriental, Western European and Russian numismatics, as well as bonistics, medallions, phaleristics and the history of collections.

Among the participants of the ARNC were staff of museums, higher educational institutions and academic institutes, employees of publishing houses specializing in the printing of numismatic literature, state archives, mints and amateur numismatists from Russia, CIS countries, and other countries near and far.

A collection of the report resumes and communications from the 14th ARNC has been published (500 copies), including the theses of 160 reports.

The St Petersburg Mint, which is an official sponsor of the State Hermitage, issued a commemorative token of the 14th ARNC.

The cultural program included a tour of the historical and literary sites within the Gatchina area: museums in the villages of Kobrina, Suide, Vyre and Rozhdestveno.
