Press Conference for the Sixth
International Festival of the Grand Waltz in St Petersburg On 29 June 2007, the Hermitage Theatre hosted a presentation to journalists of the Sixth International Festival of the Grand Waltz, which runs from 6 through 16 July 2007. The State Hermitage, together with the Creative Alliance of Museum Employees of St Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast, an inter-regional public organization, acting in support of UNESCO's declared principle of renewing society's non-material heritage, developed the concept of an annual Festival of the Grand Waltz. The festival was the winner of the Intermuseum 2003 festival in Moscow in the category "best museum project." The Grand Waltz project brings together under the aegis of the Hermitage the major cultural institutions of St Petersburg and Vienna. It not only facilitates stronger foreign cultural ties and promotes Petersburg culture in the regions of Russia and abroad, but it also encourages the patriotic education of citizens of Russia by bringing them into contact with timeless national spiritual values. Within the framework of the Festival of the Grand Waltz, each year eleven concerts are held, matching the number of summer seasons Strauss spent in Petersburg. This year the concerts will take place in the Hermitage Theatre, the Armorial Hall of the Winter palace, the State Palace of Congresses (Konstantinovsky Palace), the Great Palace of Peterhof, the Pavlovsk Palace and, finally, in the Rose Pavilion of Pavlovsk, where the great Austrian composer performed. Each concert not merely 'copies' programs of the Strauss seasons but also develops the traditions of intimate music making open to the public that were set down almost two centuries ago. In the program of the Sixth Festival there will be evenings of symphony and chamber music as well as evenings of vocal performances. Taking part in the Festival concerts will be master musicians who have already made significant contributions to the history of musical culture: the soloist of the Staatsoper in Berlin, Uta Priev (mezzo soprano); soloist of the Dresden State Operetta Isabella Ma-tsah (soprano); Marco Catol (tenor) - soloist of the Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Dresden and Leipzig theatres; soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre; the well known conductors Vladimir Altshuler, Vladimir Ziva, Mikhail Sinkevich, Alexei Karabanov and Sergei Roldugin; the double duet "Ìà.Gr.Ig.Àl;" and well known instrumentalists including violinists Sergei Stadler and Ilya Gringolts, pianists Karol Radziwonowicz, Viktor Vysotsky and Yulia Stadler; the Orchestra of the State Hermitage and the Admiralty Orchestra of the Leningrad Naval Base. In keeping with traditions of arts sponsorship, the Festival has received support from the Bank Moskvy OJSC, with whom the State Hermitage established partnership relations some time ago. One of the priority social activity areas of the Bank Moskvy in St Petersburg is preserving the cultural legacy of the Northern Capital. This is the second joint festival of the Bank Moskvy and the State Hermitage involving the revival of the tradition of support for the arts and giving our contemporaries the chance to enjoy a richer spiritual heritage. The Chairman of the Festival's Board of Trustees is Director of the State Hermitage and Chairman of the Creative Alliance of Museum Employees of St Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast Mikhail Piotrovsky. The originator of the idea and Artistic Director of the Festival is Yulia Kantor. The General Sponsor of the Festival is Bank Moskvy OJSC. The Official Partner for Staging the Festival is the Domus Production Centre.
