Return of the Lions

On 3 June 2007, on Intenrational Children's Day, painted figures of lions returned to the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace. These lions are the main elements in an art project to raise funds to assistance to the children of St Petersburg.

The painted handsome lions form the Lion Procession campaign (www.leospb.ru) organized by the Worldwide Club of Petersburgers together with the company Ermit Park to support charity work by St Petersburg organizations. They successfully spent the winter in the Great Courtyard of the Winter Palace. They have become closely linked with the Hermitage and do not appear to be terrifying guards, but rather are an appealing breakwater absorbing manifestations of tactile love of young visitors to the museum. And so they were in need of restoration. At the very start of the summer, in time for the International Children's Day, the ranks of the restored lions were complemented by new handsome fellows. The newly arrived assistance took up "collective defense” at the entrance to the Great Courtyard. Now visitors to the museum can once again admire the painted pride of lions.
