Days of Classics – 2008 Festival During 8 - 12 April 2008 the Department of the Art and Culture of Antiquity of the State Hermitage Museum hosted the annual spring festival, Days of Classics – 2008. There were all kinds of events on the venue programme: competitions, exhibitions, parades, workshops, games and performances, many of them specially tailored to the tastes and interests of the younger generation. For a whole week the Museum halls were turned into a place of creativity full of colours, sounds and the spirit of the Classics themselves. On 11 April one of the festival’s major attractions took place which was the Gods and Heroes costume competition featuring the participants’ fashion parade. More than a hundred children demonstrated the costumes they had designed and sewn themselves, inspired by classical motives. It is only appropriate that they all became stars in a special photo session organized for the occasion. For a single day the State Hermitage Museum halls turned to fantastical palaces where little Athenas, Zeuses, Hermeses and Heracleses dwelt and “reigned”, with the public present unable not to admire them. Of course, there were prizes awarded for the most beautiful and original costumes. On the same day one could enjoy the Colours of the Hellas light show held at the Jupiter Hall and classical music pieces performed on flute in the Athena Hall. The New Hermitage halls became the arena for the Labyrinth quest game organized by specialists of the Department of Antiquities for high school students. There had been several search routes designed specially for different children of different age groups; following them the participants unraveled the mysteries of Ancient Greece and learnt many interesting things about its history, art and myths. The Classical World in Sounds and Colours venue brought together young artists and musicians at the halls of the Department of the Antiquities. There was an exhibition of paintings by students of the city art schools, among the topics suggested being Gods and Heroes Fighting, Composition Antique-Style, Antique Interior Piece. Young musicians playing wind and string instruments performed pieces by classical composers. Pupils of the art studio of the State Hermitage Museum School Centre presented antique-style vessels they manufactured themselves with the help of a traditional potter’s wheel. A special programme enabled hearing impaired children try their hand in classical Greek arts and crafts such as sculpture, potting and vase painting. Anyone willing to could also participate in the Classics of the Genre photocross. On the festival programme there was also an open essay competition, the topic being From Hellas to the Land of Hyperboreans. Students from St. Petersburg secondary schools, gymnasiums and lyceums took part in it. Awards to winners of the musical, artistic and literary competitions organized within the festival framework were ceremoniously handed out on 12 April at the Hermitage Theatre. The festival was held by the State Hermitage Museum with the participation of St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences, multiple institutions of general secondary education, music and art schools and artistic studios and with the support of Likeon – Museum Concepts and Projects. |
