State Hermitage bulletin on the discovery of an icon of the “Virgin of the Sign”

On 6 October 2008 the press service of the State Hermitage issued the following bulletin:

The State Hermitage reports that on the morning of 6 October 2008 a bundle was left in the State Hermitage’s Sector of New Acquisitions containing an icon of the “Virgin of the Sign” in a gold-embroidered mount. Members of the Hermitage staff have established that this 19th-century icon was stolen from the museum and is included in the list of list of stolen items published in 2006 as number 169.

The State Hermitage expresses its satisfaction at the action of the person who had possession of the icon. We hope that this example will be followed by others.

The State Hermitage also points out that the existing precise description of this icon, including dimensions and weight, makes it possible to identify it beyond any doubt.
