Award of the Baltic Star international
prize
On 20 October 2008 the formal ceremony or the presentation
of the International Prize for the Development and Strengthening of Links
in the Humanities in the Countries of the Baltic Region was held in the
State Hermitage.
The prize was established in 2004 on the initiative of the Baltic International
Festival Centre foundation that has been active for many years in the
development of cultural links between the countries of the Baltic region.
The first people to be awarded the prize were Mikhail Piotrovsky, the
Director of the State Hermitage, the film-director Andrzej Wajda, the
actor Donatas Banionis and Mikhail Shvydkoi, the head of the Russian Federa;
Agency for Culture and Cinematography.
The 5th awards ceremony was held in keeping with tradition in the Hermitage
Theatre.
The 2008 winners of the Baltic Star international prize included the
poet, essayist and literary scholar Tomas Venclova (Lithuania), the author
Daniil Granin (Russia) and the composer Raimonds Pauls (Latvia).
In the “In Memoriam” category the award was given posthumously to a classic
figure in world cinema, the director and script writer Ingmar Bergman
(Sweden).
In the category “For supporting culture”, introduced two years ago, the
award went to Alisher Usmanov (Russia), the managing director of Gazprom
Invest Holding.
