Restoration of the Parquet Floors.
The Malachite Hall, the White Hall, the Crimson Study, the Blue Bedroom, the Boudoir

In December, 2008, the parquet restoration in the Malachite Hall, White Hall, Crimson Study, Blue Bedroom and Boudoir was completed.

In the process of the parquet restoration in the White Hall (384 sq m) special attention was paid to renovation of its base – the sub-floor (panels made of pine boards and laid on joists). Then losses in the glued-laminated parquet were filled. The White Hall was floored with mosaic-like parquet. A central rosace was incised in its main area paved with oak squares. The rosace was composed of flower design elements and made of fine wood. The following species of wood were applied: ebony, palisander, rosewood, amaranth, maple, sandalwood, birch, boxwood, plane tree, pear tree, redwood, walnut, oak, palm-tree. The cracks beyond restoration were pointed and stopped with putty matching the hues of the respective wood. All its visible defects were toned with varnish. The parquet was subsequently covered with protective coating of water-based lacquer, which does not release any substances harmful for the museum exhibits. The process of the parquet restoration took 4 months.

Upon restoration of the Malachite Hall (210 sq m) its sub-floor underwent repairing too. This hall restoration was distinguished by the carving reconditioning. In this case the craftsmen had to cut it anew, while the old mastic filling the carving acquired another hue in the course of time.

The species of wood applied: ebony, palisander, rosewood, amaranth, maple, sandalwood, birch, boxwood, plane tree, pear tree, redwood, walnut, oak, palm-tree. The carving: black and white.

The parquet in the Blue Bedroom was made of oak noted for its simple geometric pattern.

The Crimson Study and the Boudoir display the parquet floors laid out with finewood (oak, birch, amaranth, mahogany, palisander, ebony) and exposing a complicated geometric pattern.

The parquet restoration was implemented by the company "Parquet-Hall" under supervision of the State Hermitage Department of the Chief Mechanic.
