Youth Education Centre Master Class at the Conference Museums and Education: History and Modernity
On 18 April 2008 at the Youth Education Centre of the State Hermitage Museum as part of the Museums and Education: History and Modernity conference a unique master class was run in which employees talked about their experience working with young people from St. Petersburg in the sphere of real art and a demonstration of the creativity of the students’ club.
The master class was run by the sector manager, a doctor of art history, Svetlana Kudryavtseva. It included speeches made by staff of the Youth Centre with presentation of the programmes for 2008, as well as a speech by the section manager of Creative Photography, Igor Lebedev. During the course of the day in the lobby area of the Youth Centre cartoons were shown which had been made by students of the Media-Art section (manager Vladimir Smirnov-Lilo). In the lecture hall visitors were shown the work of members of Creative Photography section, including photographs from the programme Chuck Close and I, which took place in the State Hermitage Museum on 13 April – the final day of the exhibition Chuck Close: Seven Portraits.
Following the master class there was a meeting for students and the younger members of the staff from St. Petersburg museum with Marcie Karp. Marcie Karp is a senior manager for academic programmes and grants from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). As part of a lively, informal discussion relevant questions were discussed concerning museum educational programmes and special programmes associated for thesis work.
Conference organizers came to the master class at the Youth Education Centre, including representatives from the department of monument preservation and museum affairs of the Philosophical Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, Professor Antonina Nikonova, Professor Evgeny Sokolov and numerous participants of the symposium from various cities.
