International Roundtable discussion-seminar The First Ten Years of the 21st Century - New Language of Art?!

International roundtable discussion-seminar in the framework of the programme dated to the Newspeak. British Art Now exhibition took place on October 25, 2009, in the State Hermitage.

Contemporary art became an object of special interest in the exhibition policy of the State Hermitage since 2007 when the Hermitage 20/21 project was officially approved. In accordance with main objectives of the project - expansion of the museum exhibition of the 20th century art and organization of exhibitions and actions of contemporary art - a series of large-scale exhibition programmes that aroused great public interest was successfully organized in the Hermitage.

Famous foreign and local critics, curators and artists took part in the First Ten Years of the 21st Century - New Language of Art?! roundtable discussion that was organized by the State Hermitage together with the British Consulate-General in St Petersburg, the British Council, the London Friends of the Hermitage and PRO ARTE Foundation.

Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky opened and moderated the morning session. The British Consul-General Mr. William Elliott and the Director of the British Council in Moscow Ms. Rosemary Hilhorst greeted the speakers.

Mattew Collings, art-critic, journalist, author and host of the Turner Prize programme, Channel 4 BBC, London; Michael Glover, poet, art-critic at the Independent newspaper; Sir Norman Rosenthal, curator, London; Leonid Bazhanov, Director of the National Centre of Contemporary Art (Moscow); Alexander Borovsky (the State Russian Museum, head of the department for contemporary art); Elena Kolovskaya (PRO ARTE Foundation); Dmitry Ozerkov (the State Hermitage, the head of the contemporary art sector, the head of the Hermitage 20/21 programme); Sofia Kudryavtseva (the State Hermitage, the head of the Youth Centre, working group 20/21 member) made presentations. Director of BAIBAKOV art projects (Moscow) Maria Baibakova and curator Katya Sutton gave their own presentation.

The following topics were discussed at the roundtable discussion - exposition of contemporary art in museums, art-centres, galleries - differences and cross-points, its appropriateness in a traditional museum; purchasing of contemporary art objects, searching for finance; reaction of the general public and power-holding structures to contemporary art exhibitions.

Newness of contemporary art language became the topic of the discussion that was held by Dmitry Ozerkov and Marina Koldobskaya (The National Centre of Contemporary Art, St Petersburg). Leonid Bazhanov, Sir Norman Rosenthal, Vasily Tsereteli (Executive Director of the Moscow Modern Arts Museum), Dmitry Shagin (artist), Anton Kalgaev (St Petersburg State University), Marina Biryukova-Lyudvigova (art-critic) as well as artists-participants of the Newspeak. British Art Now exhibition Sigrid Holmwood and Arif Ozakca took part in the discussion.

Within the framework of the educational programme of the Newspeak exhibition it is planned to show British films, concert of the British These New Puritans band, exhibition excursions, a series of lectures Sensation! The Most Famous Exhibition Projects of the 20th-21st Centuries Art in the Museums of the World, Newspeak. St Petersburg Version work contest among young artists and students of artistic higher educational institutions.
