Panel Discussion for the Exhibition
Boris Smelov. Retrospective
21 March 2009, in the Pink Hall of the General Staff Building the panel
discussion timed to the opening of the exhibition of Boris Smelov took
place. The exhibition is the first (after his death) retrospective of his creative
work as a photographer and includes a great number of works
that were unknown before.
The following people were invited to take part in the panel
discussion - friends, like-minded persons, people connected
to the photographer through his creative work and profession,
specialists in the field of the art of photography:
well-known Petersburg masters of photography Alexander
Kitaev, Olga Agafonova, Stanislav Chabutkin, Igor Lebedev; artists Dmitry
Shagin, Aron Zinstein, Anatoly Belkin; exhibition projects' curator Valran;
writer Nal' Podolsky; the head of the Department of Contemporary
Art of the Russian Museum and others. The discussion
was moderated by the curators of the exhibition
Boris Smelov. Retrospective Arkady Ippolitov, the Senior Research
Assistant of the Department of West European Art of the State
Hermitage Museum and the President of the Boris Smelov
Foundation Vladimir Frolov. During the meeting the discussion
was about the life and creative work of the photoartist,
the key topics of his works, Smelov's approach to photography
and about the organization of the exhibition itself.
Panel discussion of March 21st was organized as a part of educational
program for the exhibition. The program also includes the following events:
4 April - meeting with the writer Nal' Podolsky;
11 April - meeting with the photographer Alexander Kitaev;
25 April - the lecture Great Photographers: Smelov's choice. Josef
Sudek;
16 May - the lecture of Alexander Kitaev The History of Photoimprints
of St. Petersburg from Daguerreotype till Boris Smelov;
23 May - the lecture Great Photographers: Smelov's choice. Henri Cartier-Bresson;
28 June - photo action Dedicated to Boris Smelov... presenting
the best works of students from photoschool Smena and group Creative
Photography of the Hermitage Youth Centre.
All meetings and lectures take place at the exposition and in the Pink
Hall of the General Staff Building on Saturdays at 15:00, photo action
takes place on Sunday at 14:00 in the day of the closing of the exhibition.
