Interaction and Space
in the Youth Education Center of the State Hermitage Museum A project of undergraduate students from the Parsons The New
School For Design, Photography Program, New York, and students from the Youth
Education Center of The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg,
Russia is open in the General Staff Building in June, The project, the first photography exhibition by American students in the history of Hermitage, includes two bodies of work, the first an exploration of the museum, and the second the function of the portrait. The stage for the first part of this exploration was set in the museum, participants were asked to "Examine the manner in which people aged sixteen to twenty five interact with each other, the artwork, and the physical space of the museum." Questions regarding ownership, access and intimacy, and the privacy of interaction immediately arose. At what point and in what manner does each culture assume personal or public ownership of the museum space? How do individuals in each culture manifest this ownership or sense of exclusion? What is the role of technology in this conversation whether as a method of presentation; or a device to create separation, intimacy or take ownership? The second body of work is a series of portraits. Both Russia and the United States exhibit a vastly different sense of formality, personal and private space, and photography's role in exploring social issues. The participants begin to define not only the cultural, but philosophical and educational differences within their countries. 11 and 14th of June at 3 pm
