Summing up Newspeak. St Petersburg
Version Contest Results
From October 24, 2009, till January 17, 2010, Newspeak.
British Art Now exhibition was taking place in the Winter Palace. The exhibition
was organized by the State Hermitage together with the Saatchi
Gallery, London, within the framework of the Hermitage 20/21 project,
a large-scale programme on expanding the collection of Western European
Art of the 20th and 21st centuries, which is designed to present the works
by contemporary Western artists in the Hermitage.
Approximately 50 works by young British artists, most of whom are not
known to the world artistic circles, were presented at the exhibition.
A vast educational programme that was held by the Youth Centre of the State
Hermitage was prepared for the exhibition and included a creative
contest among St Petersburg youth at the age from 20 to 35 (students and graduates
of artistic institutes of higher education of the city). An alternative
contest - Newspeak. St Petersburg Version - was organized
and held within the framework of this programme. Photographic, pictorial
and graphic works as well as installations in the form of models and sketches
were presented for the contest.
The name of the contest winner was solemnly announced at the State Hermitage
on January 17, 2010. The 5th year student of the St Petersburg State Academy
of Art and Industry named after Alexander Shtiglitz, Tatiana Akhmetgalieva,
who presented Thread Running All Through textile canvas, incarnating the image
of the revolting crowd, became the winner.
Among finalists of the contest the jury also made special mention of artistic
work by Denis Ichitovkin and installation by the 5th year student
of the St Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy Dmitry Petukhov. The youngest
participant - the student of the Russian State Pedagogical University
named after Alexander Gertzen, Vladimir Khaetsky, - was awarded the honourable
mention prize for his Cadaver work.
