Architectural-archaeological seminar Old Russian Architecture of the age of Saint Vladimir and Yaroslav the Wise

22-24 November 2010, under the auspices of the State Hermitage, the Novgorod United Reserve-Museum and St Petersburg division of International Council on Monuments and Sites, an architectural-archaeological seminar Old Russian Architecture of the Age of Saint Vladimir and Yaroslav the Wise was held. The seminar was attended by specialists from St Petersburg, Moscow and Kiev.

The first session The Church of the Tithes and Princely Palaces of the 10th century in Kiev (22 November) was held at the State Hermitage.
Results of archaeological research over the last years, as well as research of materials of little-known collections and archive materials were presented to the scientific community. As the destiny of remainders of the first temple of Old Russia is being debated right now in Ukraine, in the end of the session it is planned to discuss and prepare recommendations as to methods of preservation and museumification of the Church of the Tithes, a unique monument of architecture and archaeology.

The second session Sophian Cathedrals of Old Russia (24 November) was held at the premises of the Novgorod United Reserve-Museum and was dedicated to various aspects of study of Sophian cathedrals based on data obtained from written, epigraphic and archaeological sources. Setting up a new date of Kiev’s Sophia and celebrating its anniversary in 2011 was discussed in a number of reports and during the final Round Table.
