The 6th Maecenas Day at the Hermitage

13 April, 2011 the Day of Patron of Arts and Philanthropist was celebrated for the sixth time in the Hermitage Theater on the day of birth of Gaius Cilnius Maecenas, the Roman aristocrat, friend of artists, poets and musicians. A famous picture of Tiepolo Maecenas Presenting the Liberal Arts to Emperor Augustus became a peculiar symbol of this celebration.

The ceremony was opened by Mikhail Piotrovsky Director of the State Hermitage. A greeting speech of Valentina Matvienko Governor of St Petersburg to the audience was read by Alexander Platunov Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Culture of Government of St Petersburg.

Goodwill projects were introduced by Arkady Sosnov Chief Editor of almanac Russian Maecenas. Among them there are restoration projects of Samson statue for the Grand Cascade in Peterhof and restoration of the Chinese palace in Oranienbaum; establishment of a new National Museum of Lacework in Vologda, revival of the homestead of the establisher of Polytechnic University Duke Andrey Gagarin in Kholomky of the Pskov Region.

Traditionally the festival in the Hermitage was attended by children, needing help, in particular from the Children’s Village-SOS (Pushkin city) and Orphanage No 46. Clock Peacock was wound specially for them in the Pavilion Hall of the Small Hermitage.

The concert program, accompanying the ceremony, was performed by soloists of the Academy of Young Singers of the Mariinsky Theater (Artistic Director Larisa Gergieva) prize winners of international contests Olga Pudova and Andrey Bondarenko, as well as a student of the ten-grades standard school at the Music Conservatory Diana Bystrova and participants of the ballet studio of Orphanage No 46.

In the Hall of the Hermitage in a special showcase only for the time of the celebration a gift from the Hermitage Foundation (the USA) to the State Hermitage - the letter from Catherine II to Prince Grigory Potemkin with the date and manual signature of the Empress was presented.

This year the Maecenas Day was participated by guests from Moscow, Vologda, Finland, Sweden, the USA.
