Works of Bruno Liberatore.
A Gift to the State Hermitage

Bruno Liberatore, born 1947, professor at the Academy of Arts in Rome, is one of the most famous modern non-figurative sculptors in Italy. He has been very productive, takes part in exhibitions and teaches at the Academy. His works adorn many Italian squares and parks.

In 2007 the Hermitage showed Liberatore’s personal exhibition. He then also exhibited in other Russian cities, including Kazan, Vladivostok and Moscow.

In the Year of Italy in Russia and Russia in Italy, Bruno Liberatore is presenting the State Hermitage with four sculptures, the fifth, the “Planet” is being given to the museum by the company Cremonini. These works fully demonstrate the evolution of Liberatore’s work. In his earlier works, such as “Wall” (1970-1972) and “Gates” (1978) the sculptor is searching, creating expressive open-work bronze compositions. Later his work became more universal and laconic. They are not just monumental in size but in the features of artistic language (“Facade”, 1976-1978, “Planet” 1982). In recent years the sculptor has taken on more complex tasks, using different materials, happily combining metal with clay creating a living surface which makes a attractive game of volumes (“Arc and Wall”, 1999).

The exhibition, organised in the Hermitage with the support of the Italian Foreign Ministry, the Italian embassy in Russia and the General Consulate of Italy in Saint Petersburg, and also a number of Italian companies, is supplemented with other Bruno Liberatore works from the 1960s to the 1980s.
