Scientific and Technological Conference on Fire Prevention at Sites of Cultural Significance

A scientific and technological conference on fire prevention at sites of cultural significance was held at the State Hermitage Museum from November 8th to 9th, 2011.

The National Library of Russia, The State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Tsarskoye Selo State Conservation Area, the Peterhof State Conservation Area, the Museums of the Moscow Kremlin Complex and the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts participated in the conference.

The Deputy Director of the State Hermitage Museum, A.V. Bogdanov and a gaseous fire suppression expert from 3M, K.A. Bulanov, delivered some introductory remarks to the assembled guests.

Participants in the conference discussed the technical aspects of automatic fire suppression systems that have been adopted for the protection of repositories, storerooms, exhibition halls and other museum, library and archive premises. For the first time, the discussion touched on the subject of using 3M™'s Novec™ products for the restoration and conservation of artwork, as well as the application of 3M’s solutions in museums’ restoration shops.

The Program of this conference also included a workshop at which Novec™1230 fire suppression gas was tested as a safety device for cultural treasures.
