Days of Classics-2011

On 19 May 2011 the children’s art festival Days of Classics-2011 was ended. For the past five years, this festival, arranged by the Department of Ancient World, has been held in the halls of ancient art of the State Hermitage.

The main event of this festival was a children’s drawing competition ‘The World of Classics in Paints’.

More than 400 students of art schools and studios of the city participated in the competition. Children performed tasks on a variety of topics: 6-8 years - ‘The Ancient Greeks at home and at war’, 8-12 years - ‘If the ancient statue was put up not at the Hermitage’, 13 years and older - ‘Face to face with antiquity’. Top 40 works were selected and exhibited in Sivkov passageway, and the winners were awarded with certificates and gifts.

As part of the Festival Days of Classics-2011 on May 14 a master class in sculpting was held for everyone by artist Andrey Fumelli. The master class was attended by more than 50 children. Works as copies of ancient sculptures were made of clay and modern synthetic materials. On May 17 artist Andrey Fumelli conducted 3 open lessons for students of art schools of the city.

A quest game Labyrinth, devoted this year to ancient stone-cutting, was held for everyone.

For preschoolers and schoolchildren the staff of the Department of Ancient World and the Laboratory for Restoration of Sculptures and Color Stones Alexander Butyagin, Ekaterina Andreeva, Nadezhda Novoselova held lectures and tours of the halls of ancient art and the Special Storeroom.

On 15 May concerts of Musica Universalis ensemble directed by Svetlana Emelyanova were held in the Twenty-Column Hall and the Athena Hall.

A separate program was developed for disabled children - artist-restorer Ekaterina Andreeva held gaming activities in the restoration workshop of the Hermitage. At the lesson children could try out themselves in the role of restorers and cast from plaster parts needed for restoration.

The Festival Days of Classics-2011 was supported by Likeon - Museum Concepts and Projects, LLC and the PRO ARTE Charitable Foundation.
