The International Economic
Forum in Davos On January 24th, 2013 in Davos as part of the program of the International Economic Forum, a round table on the subject of “Museums and Culture” was held to discuss the role of large, encyclopaedic museums in today’s global world, their capacity to strengthen the cultural aspect of globalization, their ability to meet the cultural challenges of today and offer recipes for resolving the sharp cultural contradictions that the world is so full of. M.B. Piotrovsky, the Director of the State Hermitage Museum, who is also a member of the Forum Committee for the global agenda entitled “The Role of Art in Society”, spoke at the session. Participants in the session included James Cuno, President of the Getty Trust (moderator), Ismail Serageldin, the Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Neil MacGregor, the Director of the British Museum, Thomas Campbell, the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hermann Parzinger, the President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, and Julien Anfruns, the General Director of the International Council of Museums. The Davos Forum traditionally devotes a great deal of attention to the role of culture in the transformation of society and the process of solving its economic, political and social problems. |
