The Founding Congress of the Union of Russian Museums On October 25-28, 2001 the Founding Congress of the Union of Russian Museums took place in St. Petersburg. The Congress was attended by Hon. M. E. Shvydkoi, Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, Hon. N. L. Dementyeva, First Deputy Minister of Culture, and V. A. Yakovlev, Governor of St. Petersburg. Three hundred fifteen museums from 63 Russian regions were represented at the Congress. M. B. Piotrovsky, Director of the State Hermitage, was unanimously elected President of the Union of Russian Museums. The Union adopted the Statutes of the new organization and defined its main goals as helping protect the interests of the museums in their work, defining standards for museum work, improving the social role of the museums, and developing the informational space in cooperation between museums. |
