Meeting Marking the 85th Anniversary of Vsevolod Mikhaylovich Potin The meeting hosted by the Numismatics Department of the State Hermitage Museum was dedicated to the jubilee of Vsevolod Mikhaylovich Potin, a scholar of world renown who on 28 March, 2003, turned 85. Vsevolod M. Potin is an honorable member of the Polish Numismatics Society (1970), corresponding member of the American Numismatics Society (1973) and the Swedish Numismatics Society (1975), winner of the Prize and Silver Medal of the Society for International History of Money, FRG (1970), and Kurt Regling Medal, State Museums in Berlin, GDR (1978), honorable member of the Numismatics Society of Westphalia and Neighboring Areas (1990), honorable member of the Numismatics Society of St. Petersburg (1990), corresponding member of the Finnish Numismatics Society (1993), winner of the Russian Culture Promotion Award (1996) and honorable member of the International Numismatics Commission (1997). He has authored over 150 books and articles. This encyclopedic scholar’s basic interest is West European and Russian coins of the 10th-13th centuries and numismatic, commercial and cultural interchange between Russia and the West. Vsevolod M. Potin is also a prominent educator. For 30 years he has been lecturing on West European numismatics at the Department of Medieval History, School of History, University of St. Petersburg, the Latvian University in Riga and the State Museums in Berlin and gave seminars for museum staff of Estonia. Many graduate students have had the privilege of his research assistantship. |
