St. Petersburg Tercentenary Books Presented

On 2 June, 2003, the jubilee publication St. Petersburg: 1703-2003 was presented along with the books The Hermitage: Great Collections of the Great Museum and Russian Imperial Porcelain, prepared under the program Russian Style.

St. Petersburg: 1703-2003

This unique publication is dedicated to the history of St. Petersburg, showing various stages in its foundation and growth and describing its historical and cultural treasures. This 1112-page volume has been prepared by 40 museums, charities, archives, educational institutions and commercial companies. The Board of Editors has been headed by Mikhail B. Piotrovsky, Director of the Hermitage. Prominent historians and artists, who have taken part in the creation of this book, provide a multi-faceted and profound analysis of the historical and cultural phenomenon of St. Petersburg. The publication contains unique old and modern photographs and reproductions of paintings and drawings.

This project has been carried out jointly with the Office of the President of the Russian Federation. The book opens a series of publications dedicated to the jubilees of Russia’s major cities.

Russian Style

Pursuant to this Program, supported by the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, the Hermitage has prepared two fundamental books – The Hermitage: Great Collections of the Great Museum (written by M.B. Piotrovsky and O.Ya. Neverov) and Russian Imperial Porcelain (written by T.V. Kudryavtseva), published by Slaviya in St. Petersburg.

The Russian Style Board of Editors, chaired by Mikhail B. Piotrovsky, Director of the Hermitage, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Actual Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Assistant Chairman of the Russian Presidential Council on Culture, includes:

The book tells about the history of the Hermitage and its collections, from the age of the museum’s founder Catherine the Great till the present day. Containing 350 pages and over 400 color illustrations, the book is published in several languages.

This book focuses on the foundation and history of the Imperial Porcelain Works, from the age of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna till the present day. The book contains over 300 illustrations on 280 pages.
