Scientific Conference (Readings) in Memory of Vladimir F. Levinson-Lessing (1893-1972) Annual readings in memory of the outstanding scientist Vladimir Franzevich Levinson-Lessing, who worked in the Hermitage for half a century, were held on October 25-26, 2001. For many years V. F. Levinson-Lessing was Deputy Director for Research and studied Western European art and its Hermitage collection. Levinson-Lessing authored a fundamental work entitled "History of the Hermitage Picture Gallery." Vladimir Franzevich had a wide variety of research interests: a brilliant expert in West European art, he was outstandingly competent in Russian art and the history of St. Petersburg environs and their park ensembles and palaces. The first readings were organized by the Western European Art Department in 1993 in commemoration of Levinson-Lessing's 100th anniversary. The conference was addressed by Mikhail B. Piotrovsky, Director of the State Hermitage Museum. The conference was attended by Hermitage specialists and researchers of many departments of the museum, such as Department of the History of West-European Art, Department of the Art and Culture of Antiquity, Oriental Department, Department of Numismatics, and Scientific Education Department. The conference also included presentations by researchers from Tsarskoe Selo Museum and Reserve, and the Russian Institute of Art History. The reports of the participants in the readings discussed different aspects in the history of world art. The proceedings of the conference were published in "Synopses of Presentations at the V. F. Levinson-Lessing Memorial Readings in the Hermitage", St. Petersburg, 2001. |
