Presentation of the State Hermitage Museum's Publications On 22 November, 2001, there took place a press conference dedicated to the books published by the State Hermitage Museum during the previous year. Director Mikhail B. Piotrovsky said that the Hermitage is not just a museum containing unique collections and organizing their exhibitions but also a major center of research in Russia. 2001 saw the publication of important monographs, collected articles, reports and exhibition catalogues by the Hermitage specialists. The State Hermitage Publishing House traditionally puts out annual reports of archeological expeditions and proceedings of conferences and seminars. For the 20th International Congress of Byzantine Studies held in August of 2001 in Paris, the State Hermitage Publishing House put out a collection of articles Palmers: Pilgrimage Role in History and Culture. The Hermitage especially prides itself on an exploration of works from semiprecious stones, Art of Ekaterinburg Jewelers. One of the fields of the Museum's activities is exhibitions and catalogues. The Hermitage - Guggenheim Exhibition Center in Las Vegas, U.S.A., was inaugurated in 2001. The catalogue Masterpieces and Master Collectors. Impressionist and Early Modern Paintings from the State Hermitage and Guggenheim Museums prepared by the publishing house of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to the Center's first exhibition Masterpieces and Master Collectors: European Painting of the 19th and 20th Centuries from the State Hermitage and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The catalogue French Drawings and Paintings from the Hermitage: Poussin to Picasso (Hermitage Development Trust Publishing House) introduces the exhibition of the same name opened in November of 2001 at the Hermitage Rooms of Somerset House (London). The catalogue Destiny of a Collection: 500 Carved Stones from the Collection of the Duke of Orleans (Slaviya Publishing House) resulted from an extensive effort to recreate one of the world's greatest collections. A catalogue for one of the most important exhibitions in 2001, Golden Deer of Eurasia, was prepared and published by the State Hermitage in cooperation with the Ufa Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Slaviya Publishing House. An example of the joint research of the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts may be given by the exhibition and catalogue Scholarly Whim: Prince Nikolay B. Yusupov Collection (Khudozhnik i Kniga Publishing House, Moscow). Cooperation of the Hermitage specialists with their foreign colleagues yields magnificent results like North Pontic Antiquities at the State Hermitage published under the London University auspices (Brill. Leiden. Boston. Ko ln Publishing House, 2001). Monographs published during the previous year include Man and Doubleganger: Image and Ideology in Ancient Egypt under the Old Kingdom by Dr. Andrey O. Bolshakov, Gold of the Genghisids: Cultural Heritage of the Golden Horde by Mark A. Kramarovsky, Senior Researcher of the Oriental Department, and Muslim Art by the Hermitage Director Mikhail B. Piotrovsky, especially actual in the present-day political situation. Particular attention should be paid to publications dealing with the history of the Hermitage. For example, the first part of Pages from the Hermitage History devoted to the publication of archive materials (Minutes of the Hermitage Council from 1917-1919) has been put out. The second part will cover the period from 1920 to 1926. Two volumes of the collection of articles Christian East have been published as part of a series of publications dealing with the culture of Christian peoples of Asia and Africa. They were prepared by Aleteia Publishing House with the financial support of Interros Holding Company. It is planned to published a number of articles dealing with the Museum's publications in the State Hermitage site. |
