Hermitage Radio: Two Years in St. Petersburg
On 22 April, 2002, the State Hermitage Museum and the Hermitage Radio
held a celebration of the Hermitage Radio birthday in the museum's theater.
The Hermitage Radio was founded by ZAO Radiokompaniya Kultura. From the
very beginning, the founders were set to create a musical radio station
whose format would be unique both in St. Petersburg and entire Russia.
Classical music would be broadcast in new arrangement, along with jazz
and blues. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, B.B. King,
Eric Clapton, as well and Bach and Mozart can be heard at 90.1 FM. No
such radio had been attempted in St. Petersburg before.
Today the Hermitage Radio is a successful project both in terms of culture
and commerce. The radio is developing new programs and broadcasting new
music. Its principles are professionalism, quality and love and respect
of the audience.
During two years of its existence, the Hermitage Radio has twice won Master
Key prizes for musical mass media. In 2000 is was awarded the Best Debut
Prize, in 2001, the 3rd Best Music Radio Station Prize.
The gala concert in the Hermitage Theater was a stylish performance rather
than an illustration of the station's musical format. The virtuoso jazz
guitar player Mark Wheatfield specially came from New York to congratulate
the Hermitage Radio. His visit was sponsored by the insurance company
Russky Mir.
The concert also featured the jazz piano performer Andrey Kondakov, duet
of Aleksey Goribol and Tatiana Kuindzhi and the State Hermitage Orchestra.
