The Hermitage in the World of Publications

The exhibition opened during the Days of the Hermitage is intended to give an account of the scientific and exhibition activities of the Museum.
Some sections of the exhibition represented the catalogues of the major temporary exhibitions in the Hermitage and outside the Museum. Worth of notice are the catalogues Sinai. Byzantium. Rus. Orthodox Art from the 6th to the early 20th Centuries (published by the Foundation of St Catherine), Earthly Art - Heavenly Beauty. The Art of Islam, The Magic of the White Rose. The History of one Festival, The Treasures of the Golden Horde, The Treasures of the Armenian Church from the collection of the Holy Echmiadzin (all published by the ‘Slavia’ Publishing House).
The exhibition held abroad are reflected in the catalogues Splendeurs des collections de Catherine II de Russie. Le Cabinet de pierres gravees du Duc d’Orleans, La Lanterna della pittura, The Golden deer of Eurasia. The Catalogue The Treasures of Catherine the Great features the first exhibition in the "Hermitage Rooms" at the Somerset House in London.

Quite a large part of the exhibition represents the monographs of the Hermitage researchers, collections of scientific articles, summarized reports of conferences, periodicals with publications of the curators of the Museum. Of particular interest among the scientific monographs is the work of Yuri A.Miller Weaponry in the Caucasus and Transcaucasus in the 18th and 19th Centuries from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum (published by Naestved, Denmark).

The new book "SYSSITIA" published in the series "The Library of Antiquity" is devoted to the memory of Yuri V. Andrejev (Publishing house ‘Aleteia’). The edition called The Life of a Scientist was published to commemorate the 100 anniversary of Boris Alexandrovich Latynin, an outstanding scientist who was among the founders of the Oriental Department of the Hermitage. Another edition The collection of selected articles on the art history of Yuri A. Rusakov is devoted to the creative careers of the Russian and European masters of the 20th century (Publishing house ‘Aleteia'). Apart from that were published the collection of articles on the archeology of Classical Antiquity The Antique Cities of the North Pontic Area and the collection scientific papers From the History of Peter the Great’s Collections in memoriam of Ninel Kaliazina (published by the State Hermitage).

The summarized reports of the traditional conferences "In memoriam of Boris B.Piotrovsky" and "In memoriam of Vladimir F.Levinson-Lessing" were published in the series of the "Hermitage Readings". The first volume of the edition The Winter Palace. The Life-Story of the Imperial Residence (publishing house 'Liki Rossii') created by the group of authors from the Department of Russian Culture of the State Hermitage was also published in 2000. The history of the Hermitage Museum is in the focus of the album published in the English language The Hermitage. The History of the Buildings and Collections (publishing house 'Alfa-Color') and another illustrated edition published in seven languages The World Art Treasures from the Hermitage ('Slavia' and Publishing House Bonechi, Florence). The new guide-book round the Hermitage is also represented at the exhibition. It is published by the State Hermitage Museum and 'Slavia' publishing house within the framework of the Grant awarded by the Government of Russia.
In the series of books for children the first edition called The Fairytale Hermitage by L.Ya.Livshitz, was issued in 2000.

The new section of the exhibition reflecting the work of the Hermitage with the multimedia educational programmes represents the CD Biblical Subjects in the Works of Art of the State Hermitage Museum.
